Zap! Discover Electricity.
Kids ask big questions about the world around them, and "how does electricity work?" is one of them. Zap! Discover Electricity is a hands-on activity book it walks curious readers through some of the science of electricity: what atoms and electrons actually are, how a circuit works, the difference between static and current electricity, why some materials conduct electricity and others don't, and how a battery stores the energy it needs. Along the way, kids meet Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Edison.
But this isn't a book you just read. It's a book you do. Kids build an actual working circuit. They test everyday household objects to see which ones conduct electricity. They try two classic static electricity experiments. And when they're finished, they design their own invention, inspired by history's great inventors, and earn a certificate as an official Electricity Scientist.
Zap! Discover Electricity is part of the Simple Science series. For more fun, you can read and meet Volt in Volt Finds His Purpose.
Whether you're supplementing a classroom science unit, building out a homeschool curriculum, or just have a kid who wants to understand how things work, Zap! turns "why" into "let's find out."

Start with a story
Younger kids can get in on the fun too. My picture book Mia and the Magic Mirror introduces the same big ideas (reflection, refraction, shadows, absorption, and rainbows) through the adventures of a curious girl and a talking mirror named Luna. It’s a great read-aloud for ages 6–9, and a perfect way to get a new reader excited before the experiments start.
Try it as a pair: after Mia sees a pencil look bent in a glass of water, have your child try the workbook’s refraction experiment, “The Vanishing Coin,” and watch light bend for themselves.
